Mechanical Engineering is one of the largest schools of its kind in the UK.
Having a large staff, with a diversity of interests and experience, gives us the advantage of being able to offer programmes that have an unusually broad-base. For example, all Mechanical Engineering students are able to take courses in advanced computer-aided modelling, manufacturing and management, so that they graduate as well-rounded professionals.
Equally students on manufacturing related programmes take courses in mechanical design and analysis.
Teaching also benefits from strong links with our research programme. Research has long been recognised as the ‘engine of change’ that keeps degree programmes alive with new ideas and expertise.
In recent years, research has also become a major source of leading-edge laboratory and computing equipment, which are quickly fed into our teaching programmes.
The breadth of our activities brings benefits in terms of the financial and physical resources that we have at our disposal. For example, we are able to finance a rolling cycle of computer equipment upgrades and regular refurbishments to our laboratories.
To summarise, our policy is to maintain and develop our position as a leading teaching and research institution by directing resources into carefully selected areas of technological innovation and by maintaining strong links with industry and commerce.
