Background

Time has flown since I graduated in Civil Engineering at Loughborough University in 1995.  This was a fun time where I learnt a great deal about myself.  My mind pleasantly drifts back to the year industrial placement with Balfour Beatty on the Supertram system in Sheffield where I was an Engineer working on structures, rail and road construction (Jack of all trades). It was tough initially but great fun. After a short break I returned to Loughborough to read for my doctorate in the field of chemical treatment of contaminated soils.

Whilst putting the finishing touches together for the thesis in 1998 I spent a year at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne working as a Research Assistant on a number of contracts including cement stabilisation and solidification and investigating the consolidation and pull out resistance characteristics of draining geotextiles. After yet another short break to see in the new millennium I was off to the University of Birmingham as a Research Fellow funded by NERC investigating the collapse mechanisms of Loess. Before anyone asks, Loess is a material constructed of cemented silt particles which collapses under load when wetted.

Having supervised 5 successful PhDs, I now balance research and my roll as the Business Development Manager for Civil Engineering. Through this role I am a Knowledge Transfer Manager for the national DTI and DEFRA funded Resource Efficiency Knowledge Transfer Network and act as the Deputy Technical Director of the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme funded by DEFRA. This high level of contact between national programmes, and simplified networking, facilitates significantly increased added value and research opportunities.

Research Interests

Primarily my interests lie in the field of contaminated land remediation, ground improvement and resource efficiency, specifically chemical treatments of contaminated soil. On this basis I am interested in the physico-chemical properties of Loess specifically during hydrocollapse.

External Appointments

As part of my activity, I spend a considerable amount of time working with Government departments related to knowledge transfer and resource efficiency such as DTI, DEFRA, EA Technology Strategy Board, 2012 Games
