Engineering is key to many of the issues affecting our quality of life today. Civil engineers solve problems, moving a historical lighthouse from the edge of a crumbling cliff, providing immediate and safe drinking water to a refugee camp that has sprung up in a matter of days, or designing and soundproofing a Symphony Hall built over a busy railway route.
The recent national review of research quality reported that 65% of civil engineering research at the University of Birmingham is world leading or internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour, and almost all of our research activity (95%) is recognised internationally. We are proud of this achievement. We are equally proud that our research has informed our teaching for more than 100 years and our graduates have made considerable contributions to the development of our society. For some of the highlights of the last year see our newsletter Civil Futures (pdf).
