Chemical Engineering offers Scholarships to candidates with excellent academic records applying for undergraduate programmes. Applicants who perform to the equivalent of first class honours level will receive an entry scholarship of a £1000 deduction from their tuition fees in their first year of study, and £500 for each subsequent year that they maintain their first class performance whilst studying in the School.

Over a four year degree, therefore, the award could amount to a total of £2500.

We regard students offering the following grades as First Class:
Qualification Grades
A-level Equivalent to AAA from the best three subjects. Specifically 360 tariff points from the best 3 A-levels or from the best 2 A-levels and 2 AS levels, not including General Studies..
IB 36 points
BTEC HND Average grade of Distinction plus Distinctions in Maths and five other subjects.
French Baccalaureate 16/20
Irish and Scottish Highers AAA

To maintain first class status once at Birmingham, students must achieve an overall average of at least 70% and gain full credits at the end of each year of study. Students who do not continue to perform at this level will not receive any award for that year.

Students who did not receive a scholarship on entry but once they enter perform at a first class level and gain full credits at the end of each year of study may be eligible for £500 for each year they maintain a first class performance.

Other eligible qualifications will be considered - please contact the admissions tutor to find out the criteria.

There is no special application process for the scholarships – awards will be made automatically to all eligible UK and EU students admitted to the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham by the end of September to commence their studies in the October of their year of entry.

Awards can be made to students following any programme offered by the School, including Foundation Year students. Students in receipt of scholarships from organisations other than the University of Birmingham may receive the First Class scholarship in addition to their other awards.
