MSc/Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Chemical Engineering

with options in Food Processing, Pharmaceutical Technology and Business Studies

Chemical engineeringWelcome to the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, the only 6* Chemical Engineering school outside London!

The school originated in the early 1900s and is amongst the most prestigious schools in the United Kingdom. Although it is one of the largest it has a history of excellent community spirit.

Each year approximately 70 students enter the undergraduate school and 30 plus enter for postgraduate study, whilst there are some 25 academic teaching staff.

The Course

Chemical engineering now extends far beyond its traditional roots in oil and gas processing. The MSc in Advanced Chemical Engineering considers those aspects of chemical engineering that deal with the design and development of formulated products such as food and pharmaceuticals.
This is an advanced course that can be studied full-time over 12 months, or part time over 2 or more years.

  • The course comprises 11 taught modules* (delivered during the autumn and spring terms) and a research project (completed during the summer months).
  • Five of the taught modules are core modules and all students will study these.
  • The remaining 6 are optional modules, chosen by you from a wide selection.

 * All module descriptions presented in this site are provisional and may be subject to minor change. In the unlikely event that you are unable to attend a module of your choice (e.g. due to oversubscription) a suitable alternative will be offered.

Assessment

  • Taught modules are assessed through either a combination of examination and coursework or by coursework alone.
  • Core modules are examined at the start of the spring term (in January), while the examinations for the optional modules are held early in the summer term (May-June).
  • The research project is assessed through a written research report and oral presentation.
  • Marks will also be awarded based on your conduct and performance in the laboratory environment.

Entry requirements

You will need to have a good honours degree in a scientific or engineering discipline. International students will also need to satisfy the University’s English language requirements.
