I studied Pharmacy at Aston University and graduated in 1998. After a spell in community pharmacy, I was awarded my PhD in 2004 from the School of Pharmacy in London for research examining the use of supercritical fluids for liposome manufacture.

Since then I have been employed within the School of Chemical Engineering at Birmingham where I am currently a Research Councils UK (RCUK) Academic Fellow. My research interests focus on supercritical fluid technology, drug delivery systems and pharmaceutical process understanding.

Current and recent projects examine(d):

  • Developing new drug delivery systems for chemoembolisation (EPSRC Grant EP/G029059/1 in collaboration with Professor Philip Johnson).
  • Novel methods for the capture and formulation of microparticles generated using supercritical fluids. (EPSRC Grant EP/F037228/1).
  • The storage and manufacturing factors affecting drug-carrier interactions within dry powder inhaler formulations. (EPSRC / GSK).
  • Drying and microstructural manipulation of food materials using supercritical fluids. (EPSRC / Unilever).
  • Production of tissue engineering scaffolds using supercritical carbon dioxide.
  • Design and evaluation of encapsulated and coated liposomal formulations for oral drug delivery.
  • The use of intelligent software to examine the relationships between process parameters, material characteristics and the products of roll compaction (Pfizer).
  • Processing of Eudragit copolymers using supercritical carbon dioxide (GSK).
